The One with Florida in {10}

My husband and I just got back from the most blessed week of vacation. We still have yet to vacation to a "far off" land, just the two of us, since our honeymoon, but this was awesome-awesome. Kevin's grandparents invited us to spend a week with them. They wanted to spend some time with us and basically spoil us to death. They succeeded--and we had a great time.

IMG_0036

This trip--the driving to and fro, the sitting around and doing nothing, the eating out all the time, the sunning ourselves--took up all of my time, and I subsequently found myself "unplugged" from the internet. It was simultaneously hard to stay away and deliciously relaxing to not feel that tug of responsibility.

Here are Ten Memorable Tidbits from our week-long vacay:

1. We got incredible gas mileage on the first leg of the trip, hills and all. 42 miles per gallon totally excites me. You go, little '98 manual Civic.

2. That trusty car of ours surpassed it's 200,000 miles mark on the odometer--a milestone we eagerly anticipated with this most thrilling footage. (It's sideways for some sad reason. bummer.)

3. We spoiled ourselves (or rather, the grandparents' gift of spending money enabled us) with multiple Starbucks coffee runs. This was an exciting treat, given that we haven't had a Starbucks to visit since we moved to our tiny town. Sorry, friends, Tim Horton's just does't cut it for us.

4. A switch finally flipped in my brain and I magically understood how to successfully order my own cup of coffee at Starbucks. Kevin has been teaching and teaching all these years. He's proud. (In case you're interested, my favorite was the grande iced coffee with non-fat milk and caramel. Heavenly.)

5. In all 40+ hours of car-time we had, I didn't accomplish half of the things in my travel bag. I brought 5 books, multiple crochet patterns, and some games, but occupied almost all of my time with my audio book. Man, oh man, was that the best invention ever. I finished The Friday Night Knitting Club within 5 minutes of pulling in our driveway. Perfect.

(I totally recommend reading (or listening) to that book. Fascinating character(s) development. Plus, the narrator is great. However, there are numerous swear words dropped. So be forewarned.)

6. Speaking of travel time, I became a little driving machine on this trip. Normally I'm all of turning the keys over to Kevin and sitting in the passenger seat for the majority of any trip. But with my audio in my ear, I just wanted to keep driving. I realized it was much more enjoyable than anxiously sitting in the passenger's seat, alternating between reading, napping, snacking, talking, and complaining about the heat (in our ac-free car). Kevin loves just reading and reading and reading for hours, so it's a perfect match. Win.

IMG_0263

7. One of my first (and favorite) shopping trips in Florida always has to be Goodwill. The stores are almost always more impressive than any up north, and the selection is completely unique. My husband surprised me by being willing to tag along to BOTH (yes I both--as in two trips) to Goodwill. He helped me decide on a beautiful selection of summer tops plus easy-to-wear/everyday dresses and skirts. I plan on wearing a lot more dresses this summer. yay!

I won't tell you how many items I got for $50 because it'll just make you jealous. ;)

8. Old Navy flip flops=2 pairs for $5.00. Enough said.

9. On Wednesday, Kevin and I spent the most glorious day together at the beach. It was surrounded by a couple successfully shopping trips, a Starbucks stop, and dinner at Texas Roadhouse, but our hours in the sun were perfect. It took me far too long to finish the last few chapters of Mockingjay, and we had fun snacking and alternating between dips in the cool water and sunning our pasty skin on our beach towels.

10. The best attraction we visited was the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. Oh. My. Word. That was an incredible afternoon for all four of us. The beautifully colored tropical fish, the penguin show, petting the sting rays, the otter show, and the frightening sharks or crocodiles kept things interesting.

IMG_0042

IMG_0037

Oh! And did I mention that one of the fish in the "Aquarimania" portion of the place JUMPED OUT of the tank onto the floor right next to me. Oh my gosh, totally freaky experience. But the poor little guy! Luckily a worker was nearby to save him. (There was a crack at the top portion of the tank. YIPES!)

Aren't those incredible aquarium pictures?! Our trip was amazing, blessed, and relaxing. We ate too much, tanned too much, and bought too many DQ Blizzards. We spent quality time with the grandparents and had some great husband-wife conversations on our long drive. Yep, it was a great vacation.

The One with the Not-Super-Valentine's-y Day

This hasn't been a particularly romantic Valentine's, but I'm ok with that. We've been spending some time with my mom, chilling on the couch, munching, and watching LOST. We had plans for an epic pizza date, but neither of us were "feeling" Vday, so we're postponing our date till Friday. (We still had Pizza Hut buffet for lunch though, no worries. :D)

In celebration of our love, I thought I'd revisit the four-part series of posts I did last Valentine's, chronicling our love story. If you'd like to take a peak into how Kevin-and-Mel came to be, check out these posts.

Part 4 {The Proposal}

I love you now, more than ever, Kevin.

The One with the Super Fast Sleds

Last minute plans are sometimes the best kind!

After an absolutely lovely Saturday of book reading (The Help), birthday girl visiting (one of my beautiful Sr. Teen girls), and biology studying (with another one of my girls), I joined Sheryl & the kids for a date to Friendly's. We were all in the mood for ice cream (when are we not?!) and Friendly's was giving away FREE 12 oz Fribbles (shakes)! Awesome!

The five of us downed our shakes in time to hit the slopes. Ok, the hills. I had brought my camera along for the sled-riding activities, but I didn't expect to find myself zooming down the hills with the kids. So much fun! It was incredible how fast we flew down the gradual grade of the sledding hill--especially given that the grass was poking through.

IMG_7824

IMG_7832_1

Maddie and I had three or four speedy rides--all the way into the trees. I tried my darndest to dig my heels and hands into the snow to slow us down, but nothing seemed to work. Luckily, Miss Maddie didn't let much scare her. we just laughed and laughed as we skidded to a stop amongst the shrubs time and time again.

IMG_7844

IMG_7814

My mitten-glove hybrids didn't seem to perform very well under pressure and I had to wimp out and head for the car earlier than the kids. Fingers so frozen they burned. I wish I could find my ski gloves.

By the time we packed up and headed home it was dinner time and I had zero plans for feeding my poor husband. Thankfully, the kids starting begging me to come over for dinner and a movie (Ramona and Beezus), and Sheryl was more than willing to have us join them.

And that night it felt like we were family. Last minute plans. Dinner around the regular table--not the fancy one. Laughing, talking, sharing. No pretense. Just being ourselves, together. After dinner, we all enjoyed the movie and popcorn, as well as corralling the littlest one who has become quite the entertainer in her second year.

Thanks for a great night, family! :D

The One with {Memorable} 2011

I know we're well past the craze of New Year's posts and lists about best blah-blah-blahs of two thousand eleven, but I'm still mediating on these unforgettable moments of the former 12 months. I'm giving myself permission. I hope you don't mind. ;)

And now, in no particular order (no seriously, these are not in any sort of order. I know you can't believe it, but it's true)
Top Ten Memorable {serious, sad, and silly}Experiences of 2011

1} Taking 15 teenagers camping for 8 days to our home-away-from-home Family Camp

3} Finally jumping on the Harry Potter bandwagon and loving every minute of it. (darn it, Kevin was right again. :D)

4} Moving from our sprawling Michigan parsonage to our quaint, slightly-dilapidated, but perfectly-sized-for-us house in this quintessential small town in New York.

5}Watching my husband excel in his first semester of his MDiv program in seminary. (Who would have thought we'd be here?)

6}Building a deep, true friendship with the most amazing woman. Endlessly thankful for Sheryl.

The One with Remembering 9/11

I couldn't believe how quickly it all came back. With the news broadcasting images and recordings, interviewing President Bush and the children of the tragedy--it is like it was just yesterday. Or last year, maybe. But not an entire decade. The emotions are still raw. Tears welled up as I was transported back in time 10 years. Remembering.

{source}
Everyone said we would never forget that tragic day, September 11, 2001. The day our country was attacked. An act of war on home soil. Who could have known, on that lovely fall morning, that thousands of lives would be lost? Those who had gone into work just like usual, supporting their families. Kids at school having no way of knowing they would never see their dad or mom again. Wives, at home, watching the news, hands cradling their unborn child, crumbling into broken pieces. Alone.

And there I was, a sophomore in high school. I walked into my French class and Nick S. said something about a plain flying into the World Trade Center. I didn't even know what the World Trade Center was. And Madame Wynn didn't seem to pay much attention to this student's announcement. So we went on with class. But by the time I got to my next class, I knew something was seriously wrong. Our teacher took us down to the auditorium. Other classes started trickling in behind us. A projector screen was set up already with the live news coverage.

This was for real.

Terrorists had commandeered American planes and drove them into the World Trade Center. And then we watched as the second plan crashed into the second building. The first skyscraper collapsed. And then the Pentagon was hit. And another planed crashed in Pennsylvania.

I didn't know what to think, what to feel. I was scared. Would this mean we were at war? Was our town going to be under attack as well? What were we supposed to do next?

We all sat in silence. Hundreds of students and teachers, huddled together. Riveted by the scenes unfolding before them.

The bell rang. Somberly we walked outside and boarded the buses. Discreetly I kept an eye on the skies. At home, the news was turned on right away. How long were we going to watch this? The same images, over and over.

It was torture. But we couldn't look away.

Life didn't just go on that day. Everyone, in every town, across America ceased their afternoon activities. Ball fields stood empty. Roads quiet. Each family gathered together, telling one another how much we love each other (because what if we didn't get to say that before something this tragic happened to us?), watching history unfold before our eyes.

And today, those same tears fill my eyes. There is more understanding now, more anger, more pain.

And I pray God would continue to use this tragedy to draw men until Himself. Because that is the only good that can come out of these ashes.

How vividly do you remember that day? What was your experience?

The One with Family Camp Photos

For the past 8 days and 7 nights, we have been at Somerset Beach Campground for our church conference's Family Camp. It's quite the epic experience that we plan on being a part of for years to come. Having been on many sides of Family Camp, we have an unique perspective of the week+ long event. Kevin has been to over 20 Family Camp's since he was a little guy, we have both worked the counseling and housekeeping end of things, and I worked in the office last summer. Oh, Family Camp (as Sara might say.)

After bringing our students to volunteer (and have a bit of fun) at Family Camp last summer, they started begging and pleading with us to plan another trip for this July's event. We couldn't say no to their beautiful little pouty faces. :)

Though we are beyond exhausted, so thankful to be home in air conditioning and with clean feet, the last week has been a time to to remember. Our teens did a tremendous job of working with the children's program every morning and evening, and they were mostly spot-on compliant with the RULES we had set out for them for their week under our authority.

Boy, can I just say it's really difficult to be charged with the care of 15 teenagers for 8 days. Wow. What a responsibility. So many questions running through my head at all hours of the day.

Have they all eaten breakfast?
Who hasn't showered?
How many people just left for that hike?
Where's ....?
What do we do when 6 girls' belongings get flooded during torrential downpours?
How do I deal with boy-crazy-girl-jealousy?
Who's turn is it to help with dishes?
Is it bedtime yet?!

Keeping track of who's eaten, who's showered, who's in a bad mood, who's arguing, who's done their devotions, who's in bed on time, etc is a BIG job.

But, honestly, these teens made it pretty easy on us!

Here's our week. In pictures.

The One With Time Changes

It's a precious thing watching as time changes so much, yet protects the most important pieces of life. God is so good. He knew seven years ago how I would be blessed year after year by this beautiful group of women who just happened to be my dorm floor-mates. Four years of college, four years of sharing bedrooms, bathrooms, favorite clothes, advice on boys, prayer, laughter, Gilmore Girls, flip flops, peanut butter, and hugs. We did everything together, became family. It was a beautiful thing to behold.

And now, three years after we left the place that brought us together, the bonds of family are still unbroken. Distance separates us, lives get busy, contact may be put on the back burner. But no matter. I believe each of us knows deep down that we're always there.

Our evening spent together on Tuesday was so lovely. Eating, laughing, reminiscing, sharing new blessings and burdens. We've changed, each of us. Living on our own, learning to be married, experiencing motherhood, pursuing a passionate career. Yet maintaining our friendships through it all.

So blessed.

The One with the Frisbee Party

Friday afternoon we were able to spend a few hours with some of our best college friends. Brittney planned a surprise birthday party for her husband Nick by gathering all of his friends together for a reunion game of Ultimate Frisbee.

IMG_7127

The girls did the cooking while the boys headed to the local park. Between Brittney, Cheryl, and me none of us knew anything about grilling, especially starting the grill. Cheryl and Britt did an outstanding job getting things going, however, while I cut up a watermelon and delivered forgotten tennis shoes to the Frisbee game. At one point while cooking, the three of us had been gabbing for close to 10 minutes when suddenly I remembered, "THE BURGERS!" Thankfully, nothing burned! In fact, the boys were quite impressed with our grilling skills.

IMG_7142

IMG_7097

Between a mountain of meat, hot baked beans, chips, my oatmeal raisin cookies, watermelon, and a rainbow-bit cake in Britt's honor (it was her birthday 2 days before Nick's--she deserved a treat!), we had more than enough food to go around. The boys had a blast playing Ultimate and didn't even keep score. (I hear there were multiple questions about me playing Frisbee with them. I was always their "token girl" on the team in college. But I just felt a bit out of practice and figured spending time with the girls was a good thing.) We all spent time reminiscing about our college antics, and Brittney and I had a chance to take a woodsy walk around the park.

IMG_7139

Thanks for hosting a great party, Britt!

(I won't mention the fact that they were all up until 3 in the morning, and I fell asleep on my couch at 9:30pm. I never was a night owl. But hey! I'm still a fun person. :D)

The One with My [Not So] Baby Sister

IMG_0016

My little baby sister turned twenty-one years old yesterday. I cannot believe it. I am seriously in awe of the fact. First of all, it's impossible because I'm still 17 and she's 4 years younger than me. Secondly, it's only 1998. And thirdly, there is just no way that we're both grown and living on our own in cities far from home.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!!!

IMG_0029

But I am so thankful for my Ashley Bashley. (That's what we called her sometimes. We are a little weird, I'll admit.) Ash and I have an infinite number of memories and inside jokes. Friday nights with Grandma and Gramps, McDonald's and Boy Meets World and maybe a little Rummy thrown in there. Summer afternoons with Mary playing drive-thru and swimming till our lips were blue. Oh, the ski trips. Running into SLOW signs, racing down the slopes and getting in trouble, showing off for dad, mom leaving you on the lift.

IMG_0036

Mon Frere (another weird sister thing. yes, it means "brother" in French), I love you. I'm so proud of you. Happy Birthday!

The One with the Childhood Friends

As I mentioned in my list of 10 reasons I know I'm a “grown up,” gobs and gobs of my friends are having baby showers and subsequently giving birth to the most beautiful tiny human beings ever. March 5th was no exception. One of my friends from elementary school was having a baby shower in my home town. I was able to drive to my parents' house Thursday and spend a few quality days with Mom and Dad. On Saturday, Mom and I got all pretty and headed to the church.

We spent the next two hours talking and catching up on the lives of my closest friends from my elementary days. I hadn't seen Mary since sometime during high school—8 or 9 YEARS—and Amber and I last saw each other at her wedding in August 2008. Amber's mom was there, too, and the five of us had the best afternoon together.

I had forgotten how blessed I was to have had those girls in my life. We met in 2nd or 3rd grade at our teeny, tiny Bible school, and the hours we spent at each others' homes for sleepovers and birthday parties are countless. They are a part of a whole segment of my life that so easily gets placed in the back corners of my mind as life goes on around me. We all live in different towns. We all have different stories. We're all in different stages of life. But we still have our Jesus in common, we are all still seeking Him.

And the amazing thing is—those girls were such great friends of mine that talking to them after years of no contact was almost as if no time had passed. It wasn't awkward or uncomfortable. Within minutes we were laughing together, sharing stories, finding commonalities once again. And we continued to disrupt the baby shower with our chatter for the remainder of the event. :)

Tabitha, Mary, Amber, I love you girls. I'm so thankful to still have you in my life after eighteen years. What an incredible blessing.

The One with the Mentors

I am grateful for my past. Past experiences. Past relationships. Past learning. All of those factors have had a huge part in making me who I am today, and not only that but many of them have proven themselves continually effective in my life. It amazes me how many lessons have affected me--the way I think, the way I make decisions.

Today, Kevin and I had the opportunity to spend a few hours on campus--our old stomping ground--Spring Arbor University. Though there is less than a handful of students who still have any idea who we are, the faculty and staff who impacted our lives still remember. It is a blessing to be able to call or email a professor seeking advice on anything--life, ministry, scholarship--and they go out of their way to answer. Many of them will even set aside two hours to buy you dinner and spend time catching up on life.

We value the counselors God has placed in our lives. They are irreplaceable, unforgettable mentors. It is so important to surround our lives with those who are older, wiser, experienced--those willing to give of themselves to invest in us.

Do you have anyone like this in your life? I pray you do.

The One with the Daddy Dates

Tonight my daddy texted me and asked me if I wanted to go to dinner with him while I'm home. My dad asked me on a date! I said "sure!" right away, of course. I never turn down free food, after all.

No, no. It's so much more than that. Dad loves spending time with me, and I love spending time with him. For as long as I can remember, Daddy has taken me on dates. I was probably 6 or 7 when our dates started. I would order the chicken tenders and french fries at our favorite local restaurant Caruso's. Dad ordered the special or something equally Italian, always including the salad with the "house" dressing and Italian bread. Sometimes, though, we would share a calzone. yyyyummm.

dad_mel

Throughout school, report card time always meant date nights. Yeah! I loved the one on one time, the fact that it was dad's idea, and having the opportunity to get pretty. All of those factors still apply.

I am blessed to have a dad who I can call "Daddy," who still likes me to snuggle beside him, who thinks I'm worth spending time talking with. I'm looking forward to our date. Maybe I'll get the chicken tenders again, you know, for old time's sake. ;)

Do any of you have special memories with your dads?

The One with Our Love Story. [part 5]

If you've been reading along as I retell our love story, hand written by our Great God, I hope you've enjoyed it. To catch up, check out Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and The Proposal.

And here we are, six and a half years, two college degrees, one white dress, and 2-1/2 years of marriage later. He's still hilarious. I'm still a spaz. He still calms me like no other. I still make him chuckle. It's a beautiful thing to be in love.

We've had our share of hard times--what do you expect from a relationship between two hard-headed, Type A, "I'm always right", my-way-or-the-highway firstborns? But WE are exactly what God wants us to be. He's the logical to my emotional, the strong to my weak, the procrastinator to my over-achiever, the peanut butter to my jelly.

He's my lobster.

The One with Our Love Story. [part 4]

continued from our love story [Part 1] [Part 2] and [Part 3].

The Perfect Proposal
August 21st, 2007

as recorded by Melanie just days later.

Melanie had spent the evening at Kevin's house and around 10:30pm he was driving her back to Somerset Beach Camp (where she lived and worked for the summer). He started reminiscing about his childhood years spent there, and they both agreed that it was a blessing to have shared a summer of camp counseling alongside one another. As they were pulling into the drive, Melanie suggested they go for a walk on the trails around the lake since neither of them had done so in 2 years. They made their way out to “The Point” (a narrow jut of land in the middle of Mission Lake), and Kevin's arms were immediately wrapped around her.  As they were standing there in the cool fog, hearing the water lapping against the shore, and lovingly gazing into one another's eyes, they realized what a perfect night it was.

For nearly a half hour Kevin went on and on about how much he was blessed by Mel. He told her how he had always had confidence in their relationship, and that God had granted him complete peace about their future together. After a few more precious moments Kevin said, "But there's one more thing left to do." With that, he got down on one knee and said, "Melanie Marie, will you marry me?" Melanie responded quickly with a gleeful "Of course!"

He placed the ring on her finger, but since it was dark she didn't bother looking at it right away. When she finally asked to see it, he shone the flashlight on it and tears rushed to both of their eyes.  The white gold that wrapped around the central diamonds and the eight smaller gems flanking it on either side was exactly what Melanie would have asked for if she could have come up with the image of that perfect symbol of everlasting commitment.  For the remainder of their time together, they laughed, shared their dreams, and embraced the moment and one another. It was absolutely perfect!

The One with Our Love Story. [part 3]

continued from [Part 1] and [Part 2]

All my family ever heard about was "Kevin this" and "Kevin that." Things really turned a corner when my birthday rolled around. Kevin woke up at 7:20 to meet me in the DC with a birthday card. So sweet. He left a note on my chemistry seminar door that say, "Happy Birthday, Melanie. She's 19 today." He passed a cute note to a mutual friend who left it for me to find on my dorm room desk after class. (He was encouraging me to leave my homework for later and enjoy the night. Little did he know he would be trying to get me to relax for the rest of his life.) And then he came with me a few friends to a Sanctus Real concert. (Unfortunately, we were the only people at the concert, but it still rocked.)

A week before Thanksgiving Break, I was working on a big research paper in the library...on a Saturday night. (I seriously don't know what this guy saw in me. I was lame.)  Every 10 minutes I'd check my email and have another one waiting from him. He was so distracting. I was completely intoxicated with him. Finally, he decided we "needed to talk." I met him in the lounge of his smelly dorm building, thinking the worst. (Thinking the worst is my default. Not the best habit to have.)

He sat me down and said, "I don't want to rush you, but I want you to know I'm ready to take our relationship to the next step. I would like to date you, Melanie, but I will wait for you as long as you need. Go home for break and think about it. We'll talk when you get back."

That was the longest holiday break of my college career. I was thinking, mulling, talking to family and friends. When I had made my decision, I had to sit in a car for close to 8 hours (rather than 4-1/2) in Thanksgiving traffic. It was torture.

We pulled back onto campus, and I called him up immediately. We met in the Cougar Den--the little "cafe" connected to the DC. I told him, "YES!" as soon as we sat down. We talked for quite some time about who knows what, and on our way back to our dorms, I asked, "So now what?" I had no idea what to expect, what to do next, what was "supposed" to happen when you're dating someone. Kevin chuckled and said, "Don't worry about it. Just keep being you and the rest will fall into place."

So that's what I did.

The One with My Valentine's Day Top Ten

1) We spent time snuggling on the couch and reading.

2) Kevin wrote a little something for me on his blog.

3) There was no pressure.

4) I told Kevin he could pick out my clothes for the day, and he did a great job.

5) I got to wear a skirt!

no. not this skirt. but I hadn't seen this picture in years
and I thought it was appropriate. circa 2005.

6) The sun was out and it was warm enough to go without a heavy coat (yes 38 is warm).

7) We had a lunch date. Because we savor our evening down time at home.

8) Our friends, Josh and Amanda, recommended this great new pizza joint. It was our 5th year of the find-a-new-pizza-place-for-Valentine's-Day tradition.

9) After our delicious pizza where I didn't over-eat (for once!), we went window shopping at the mall. It was lovely--strolling hand in hand, taking our good ol' time, people watching, Teavana tea sipping, and book browsing. *love*

10) It was my 7th with my first and only Valentine.
